ABSENTEE VOTES
Two Council Elections
Absentee voting papers are now being issued for by-elec-tions which will be held to fill vacancies on the Lyttelton Borough Council and the Heathcote County Council. There are three candidates for the Lyttelton election, to be held on Saturday, February 4, and four for Heathcote’s Cashmere riding seat, with the election on Tuesday, February 7. Absentee voting papers are available to electors who will be absent from the districts on polling day, to those who are ill or infirm, to those with religious objections to voting either on Saturday or Tuesday, and where hardship would be involved.
“The object of absentee voting Is to get as many people as possible to exercise their right to vote,” said Heathcote’s returning officer (Mr J. A. Geard). “The law bends over backwards to give everybody a vote.”
