SEAT FOR MR STEIN

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Jan. 24.

Marshal Ky today confessed that he did not know whether he would take back to Saigon with him the Australian Communist journalist, Mr Harry Stein. At a press conference in Australia last week, Marshal Ky offered Mr Stein a seat in his plane to Saigon.

“I didn’t really know if he was Communist,” he told reporters in Wellington.

“If people see me come back with a Communist in my plane I don’t know what they’ll think,” he said. Marshal Ky was pressed for his intentions regarding Mr Stein.

“Frankly, I don’t know,” he answered. He confirmed reports about inviting two other Australian journalists back to Saigon, adding that those journalists had said that “free men" also should be taken if a Communist had been invited.
