HASTINGS Janitary 24
Two young people were seriously injured last night when a grass cutter bar, about six feet long and weighing more than lewt, fell as they were passing a truck and carved through the windscreen and side of their car.
Colin Mannering, aged 18, of Tikokino, suffered chest injuries and a fractured jaw. His condition this morning at the Hastings Memorial Hospital was said to be critical.
Jenny Hambrook, aged 18, of Taihape, suffered fractures of both jaws. Her condition this morning was said to be fairly satisfactory. The accident occurred at 9.30 p.m.
A three-ton truck driven by Mr G. Wattie, of Havelock North, was travelling from Tikokino with a tractor on the tray. According to Mr Wattie, the cutter bar was in the upright position and secured by a bolt.
As it fell it sliced through a door pillar of Mr Mannering’s car and entered the vehicle.
