DAMAGE BY FIRE

Two Premises - Involved

A fire at the premises of J. Deyell and Company, Ltd., 184 Carlyle street, on Monday afternoon destroyed or damaged freight pallets stacked in a rear yard. The fire also caused minor damage to the two-storey, corrugated-iron building belonging to the Austin Chalk Company, Ltd., 91 Byron street, which is adjacent to Deyell’s yard. Clay pipes stacked in the building drying before being fired were destroyed. While fighting the fire, Station Officer R. Cox, of the Sydenham station, injured an ankle. He was treated at the Christchurch Hospital and discharged. One machine from Sydenham and one from Headquarters attended the call, which was received at 3.19 p.m.

The brigade during the day attended minor grass fires on the river near Bexley road, on the corner of Pound and Harewood roads, on vacant land to the east of the tunnel road, and in Penn place. Three machines were called to a fire in the decking of No. 7 jetty at Lyttelton at 5.25 p.m. yesterday. The fire did minor damage. One machine was sent from Woolston and two from Lyttelton. A paling fence at 141 Wairakei road, a property occupied by Mr C. McKinley, was slightly damaged by fire. One machine from Harewood and one from St. Albans answered the call, which was received at 1.30 p.m.
