HELICOPTER CRASH

Two Escape Uninjured

Mr lan Stirling, a student of the University of Canterbury, escaped uninjured from a helicopter crash near Hallett Station, Antarctica, early on Monday morning. The pilot, Lieutenant Commander A. B. Callison, was thrown clear of the helicopter as it struck the ice. He also was uninjured. Mr Stirling was on a routine flight from the United States Coastguard icebreaker Glacier, and taking a census of seals in the area for the Antarctic Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, when the accident occurred. The helicopter lost power at 500 ft, descended rapidly and rolled over three times after landing on a floating glacier tongue. It was a total loss.

Mr Stirling and the pilot were picked up by a second Glacier helicopter, and Mr Stirling then continued with bis research. Icing up of the carburettor is believed to be the cause of the crash.
