Auckland had the most successful day when the national senior schoolchildren’s softball tournament began in Wellington yesterday. • The Auckland boys’ and girls’ teams were unbeaten. Results:— Boys.—Hutt Valley 6, Wairarapa 1; Southland 6, Canterbury 0; Auckland 6, Otago 0; Wellington 12, Hawke’s Bay 2; Waikato 13, Hawke’s Bay 8; Southland 12, Wairarapa 0; Otago 7, Canterbury 6; Wellington 2, Hutt Valley 1; Auckland 9, Hawke's Bay 7; Otago 21, Wairarapa 3; Hutt Valley 3. Canterbury 2; Southland 16, Waikato 0.

M.C.C. Match.-r-A ninthwicket stand by G. Arnold (71) and D. Brown (41 not out) helped the M.C.C. under-25 cricket team to a total of 299 on the opening day of the threeday match against Central Zone. At stumps Central Zone had replied with 56 for one.
