Shorter Habit

Sisters of the Sacred Heart order have changed their former religious habit for a more modern dress. After Christmas, thousands of nuns throughout the world cast off their full-length robes for shorter, lighter ones. The new one-piece dress, made of a synthetic fabric, will allow greater freedom of movement.

Commenting on the new dress of the Sacred Heart 'order. Mother Mary Kennedy | of Cottesmore College, Christ- | church, said yesterday it was |the first time there had been any major modifications to ithe habit since the order was i founded in 1800. i The order was founded for

the education of children of the “upper classes," after the French Revolution, and the foundress chose the dress and head-dress of the French peasants for the first Sacred Heart sisters. Summer and winter dresses for the order will both be black in New Zealand, though in many of the hotter countries around the world, the sisters wear white.

“It is not really like a religious habit any more. It is really a dress,” said Mother Mary Kennedy. The photograph shows Mother Mary NewmanWatt, wearing the new dress of the order.
