STRONG WATER POLO SQUAD

The inclusion of last season’s Canterbury representatives, L. Mclntosh and' M. Scott, has strengthened considerably the Canterbury A water polo squad.

The squad was announced by the sole selector (Mr P. MacFarlane) for the national championships in Christchurch from February 28 to March 4. Neither Mclntosh nor Scott was available for the South Island championships in November and their strength and experience will give Canter-

bury some of the solidarity which was missing in its 6-3 and 13-7 wins over Otago and Southland respectively. Mclntosh, in particular, has shown in his last few club matches a return to the form which took him close to New Zealand selection three -seasons ago.

In its goalkeeper, L Farquhar, Canterbury would have one of the safest defence men in the country and his sure, and often spectacular, saves have brought him well-

deserved representative honours.

B. Mustchin, aged 15, has retained his place in the squad at this stage but he will probably be forced to rely on centre-field players W. Williamson, I. Gunthorp, and G. Knight during championship play. The two lightest members of the squad are M. McGirr and J. Hay but their speed around the pool and quickness in front of the opposition goal justify their selection.

Canterbury B The selector of the Canterbury B squad, Mr J. de Haan, has named 10 players, all of whom have competed in national championships, to play for this year’s B grade title. The most notable inclusion in this team is P. Hatchwell, who has not shown the form this season which has made him one of Canterbury’s foremost scoring forwards over the last few years.

The squads are:— Canterbury A.—l. Gunthorp (captain), W. Williamson, J. Hay, M. McGirr, L. Mclntosh, B. Mustchin. M. Scott, I. Farquhar (goal), G. Knight. Canterbury B.—P. Hatchwell, R. Erikson. G. Doyle, L. Scott, F. McKenzie. G. McKenzie, R. Dann, P. Sturge, R. Pirle, G. Williamson (goal).

Fine Bowling.—The young leg spinner. R. Paulsen, led Queensland to a 224-run win over Victoria in a Sheffield Shield match yesterday. He took five for 70. Scores: Queensland 319 and 297/7 declared, beat Victoria 202 and 188 by 226 runs.
