WELCOME BY MAYOR

About 200 men, women, and children greeted Air ViceMarshal Ky and Mrs Ky with

restrained cheers and clapping as they arrived at the City Council chambers for the Mayoral reception. Inside the council chambers Air Vice-Marshal Ky and Mrs Ky were met by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning. After signing the visitors’ book they met councillors and their wives. No Labour councillors were present.

In his address of welcome Mr Manning said that as the Government extended a warm invitation to Air Vice-Marshal Ky to visit New Zealand so

did he, as Mayor of Christchurch, extend a sincere welcome to the city. The visit would stimulate New Zealand’s interest in Vietnam and in South-east Asia in general. As Vietnam was relatively close to New Zealand, it could be that concerns of common interest might draw the countries closer together. Air Vice-Marshal Ky said he did not know how to express his feelings of appreciation at the welcome he had received. Mr Manning presented Air Vice-Marshal Ky with a set of greenstone cuff links, and Mrs Manning presented Mrs Ky with a greenstone pendant.
