DOURO CUP

Mavis Earl Brilliant (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Mavis Karl showed much of the brilliance of her sire, Second Earl, in winning the Douro Cup for Mr and Mrs A. X. Wallbank at Trent* ham yesterday.

Mavis Earl had the speed to take up one of the leading positions in a big field near the half-mile, and there was not much doubt what would win when B. F. Andrews rode her clear early in the run home. At the end she had a lead of a length and a quarter over Summer Praise, which was at fairly generous odds after a failure in the high-weight on Saturday. Summer Praise made steady progress from the ruck in the straight and beat the consistent southerner, Bob’s Secret, by half a length. Bob’s Secret was in the leading line for a start, and remained handy in a packed field to the straight. GayaMan, one of the leaders from the halfmile to the home turn, was a creditable fourth.

Dry Time picked up several places for fifth and Day, the each-way favourite, was sixth after appearing to have every chance.

Turf Commander ran keenly in a tight bunch close to the lead, but had nothing left at the two furlongs, and only plodded for seventh.
