Rioters Sentenced

(N Z. Press Association/ TAURANGA, Jan. 23. A period of detention in a detention centre was imposed on each of four youths when they appeared before Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., today for sentence on charges arising from the New Year’s Eve riots at Mount Maunganui.

The youths appeared for sentence before Mr Donne on January 17, and were remanded further for a medical examination.

Neil Anthony Paul Schou, aged 17, a timber-worker, of Tauranga, was convicted of disorderly behaviour in a public place; Leslie Thomas Rolls, aged 18, a boner, of Feilding. Allan William Reid, aged 18. a workman, of Westmere, and Sydney Lee Watson, aged 20, a shed hand, of Hamilton, were all convicted of wilfully damaging windows. The youths were also placed on probation for one 'year with the condition that they abstain from liquor. Watson and Reid were each ordered to pay restitution of r»l 5s 10d, Rolls to pay restitution of £4O 2s 9d and witnesses expenses of £2 5s 6d, and Schou to pay witnesses’ expenses of £lO ss. The Magistrate told the youths that they would spend three months in the detention centre unless the; proved that they had learned their lessons. If so. they could be released in two months.

They were now in a position where they could no longer break the law without heavier penalties being imposed, he said. Appeals Lodged Appeals have been lodged on behalf of two of the men convicted by Mr Donne, of offences committed during the riots at Mount Maunganui. Mr R. F. Dillon, counsel

for the two men, said today that the appeals would be heard in the Hamilton Supreme Court at a date to be fixed.

Bruce William Bryenlon, a 23-year-old Hamilton boilermaker, will appe. ’ against a conviction and sentence of six weeks’ imprisonment, and one year’s probation, imposed on a charge of wilfully damaging windows. Bryenton had pleaded not guilty. Kevin William Reid, aged 21, a carpenter, of Hamilton, who pleaded guilty to a charge of wilfully damaging windows, is appealing against a sentence of two months’ imprisonment, and probation.
