Gearry Hits Unbeaten 109
A century by the Canterbury Colts captain, R. M. Gearry, highlighted a day of bright, entertaining cricket when the Northern New South Wales Colts (Emus) began the last match of their South Island tour against a Canterbury Colts XI at Hagley Oval, yesterday.
At stumps at the end of the first day of three, Northern New South Wales was seven wickets down for 103 in reply to the Canterbury Colts total of 231. Gearry scored 109 before he ran out of partners. His
innings was one of controlled aggression, his century coming up in 145 minutes. Arriving at the crease with the score at three for 59, he steered his side out of dan-
ger and shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 52 with D. R. Hadlee and a tenth-wicket partnership with A. S. Murray of 59.
Included in his innings were eight fours and a six. A slow outfield kept the boundaries down to a minimum all day. Among the Emu bowlers, the tall right-hand medium pacer J. Walsh, bowled capably and the right-hand legspinner, R. Shelton, bowled quite tidily.
The Emu opener, D. Allen, who has made nearly 300 runs on the tour, batted solidly for 24 but the others were dismissed cheaply because they chose to play back with the ball keeping low. J. Walsh was an exception and he scored 39 in 42 minutes.
