SWIMMER SAVED

(N.Z. Preet Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 23. An oxygen resuscitator almost certainly saved the life of a man who was dragged from the surf at Opunake this afternoon. He is Mr Ernst Forster, single, of Opua road, Opunake. He was dragged unconscious from the surf about 2.30 p.m. and was later taken to the New Plymouth Hospital where his condition late tonight was fair. Dr. P. L. Cassi, of Opunake, gave Mr Forster oxygen with the Opunake St John Ambulance’s resuscitator. He said that if the equipment had not been available he doubted if Mr Forster would have survived.

Mr R. Donnelly saw Mr Forster in difficulties and shouted for another swimmer to sound the beach alarm. Miss Diane Dobbin helped him drag the man to the beach. The alarm attracted the attention of Mr C. Grant who helped the other swimmers and began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It took about 15 minutes for the swimmers to fight their way to the beach with the unconscious man.
