U.K. LAW CHANGE

Political Sanctuary (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 23. Britain will this week consider changing the law to allow members of the British Commonwealth to seek political sanctuary in Britain, “The Times” reported. The Home Secretary, Mr Roy Jenkins, will introduce into the Commons today a bill which will alter the law on fugitive offenders and give Commonwealth citizens the same rights as foreigners. The amendment of the law results from the Parliamentary outcry which came when the Nigerian Government in 1963 forced the British to hand over for trial Chief Enahoro, who had applied for political sanctuary. On his return to Lagos he was sentenced to 15 years’ gaol for plotting to overthrow the Nigerian Government.

Church And State.—An acceptable compromise between Church and State on the controversial question of control over Roman Catholic seminaries appeared possible today after two meetings between Communist and Church representatives.—Warsaw, January 23.
