Student Fee Rise Brings Protest
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Jan. 23. Members of Parliament and prominent academics are expected to speak at a public meeting in London on February 1 protesting against the British Government’s decision to raise fees charged to overseas students in Britain. According to the “Observer,” while the students wait for a reply from the Minister of Education, Mr Crosland, to their request for a meeting, they are “bombarding Com-
monwealth High Commissioners, members of Parliament, universities and teachers with letters seeking support ” “Mr Crosland’s case is that subsidising overseas students' fees cost Britain £lB million last year. The students’ reply that the decision which puts, university fees up from about £7O to £250 a year will hurt those least able to pay: the Africans,” the newspaper said. There are 71,000 overseas students in Britain. Almost 40,000 are training to be nurses or are in industry and are not affected. But 16,000 are in universities, 12,000 at technical colleges and 4000 working for their General Certificate of Education.
