SISTERS-IN-LAW WIN HACK AWARDS

Successes Highlight Of Show At Duvauchelle

The highlight of the Peninsula Horse Show and Pastoral Association’s Show at Duvauchelle on Saturday was the success of the Hutchinson family in gaining the championship and reserve championship for hack horses.

After considerable excitement about the ring, two sisters-in-law, Mrs A. J. and Mrs T. W. Hutchinson, won the awards. From an attendance of about 500, the gate takings were £53 5s 6d, well down on the £73 2s 6d taken last year. Only once before in the 53 years of the association has a greater number of entries been received for the horse events, although entries in the home produce sections were well down on last year. The cattle, sheep and dog sections were not well patronised.

In the hack and pony classes there was an extremely high standard.

Miss Anita McPhail’s Glitter proved a splendid mount when it won the championship for the best mannered and paced pony over 12.2 hands and not over 14.2. Miss Susan Gray on Christopher Robin won the championship for the best mannered and paced pony, 12.2 hands and under, rider less than than 14 years. Anita McPhail also won the championship for the best girl rider aged more than 10. Warren Walker won the championship for the best boy aged more than 10. The jumps were too liigh for

many of the ponies and hunters, but there were some fine performances and Mrs A. J. Hutchinson’s Pay Boy did some very smart jumping. Mrs W. L. Jones and Miss H. D. Kendall’s Loch Lomond completed a good show by winning the award for the champion hunter. Miss Kendall, in association with G. Thompson, also won the reserve championship with Lynn Royal. The extremely pleasant weather provided all entrants with an excellent opportunity of preparing for the bigger Little River Show .next Saturday. Competition was particularly keen in the hack section of the horse events but most of the stock up for judging showed the effects of the sunless weather of previous weeks. Mr K. W. Abrams, judge in the fat sheep section, said the sheep were feeling the pinch of the overcast weather and cooler conditions of the last three weeks. The best of the fat lambs seemed to have been sent to the works.

Fewer flock sheep than expected were entered and no champion of champions award was made. However, some good Romneys, Southdowns and South Suffolks were on display. Friesians dominated a light cattle entry, providing both the champion bull and champion cow. The entry was the lowest for many years. The Grand Parade was led by

the president of the association, Mr D. R. Marshall, and the Christchurch Ladies* Highland Pipe Band. Added colour was provided by the trek of about 20 members of the Ashburton Pony Club to the show. It took them several days. Mr C. Pickering, a farm manager from Pigeon Bay, dominaed the collie dog entry and his slut which won the championship was a splendid animal. Great interest was shown in the “Suc-A-Bar,” designed by Mr V. S. Shadbolt, of French Farm. This machine is designed to feed six calves at the one time and is used when weaning.
