Chance To Take Hawke Cup

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. North Canterbury had a good chance of taking the Hawke Cup from Manawatu after the first day’s play at Palmerston North on Saturday. North Canterbury look three Manawatu wickets for 56 runs, after making 200 in its first innings. Manawatu’s three Central Districts’ batsmen, D. N. Macleod, V. T. Pollard and B. W. Yuile, stand between North Canterbury and the cup. Macleod made a scratchy start and was rather lucky not to lose his wicket, and Pollard and Yuile have yet to come to the crease.

The North Canterbury captain, A. F. Wright, did his first job well in beating Pollard for the toss and when 90 for two at lunch, North Canterbury appeared to be on the way to a big total. However, Manawatu broke through and until Wright and D.

Mcßae came together the side was in danger of being dismissed for less than 130. Wright scored 45 and eventually North Canterbury finished with 200. The North Canterbury opening bowler, R. C. Merrin, soon took the wickets of G. Haddon and G. Wright. North Canterbury may well regret its decision to go into this match without a genuine Spin bowler.
