MISS LEGGE WINS UNDER-17 TITLE

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Miss R. Legge (Canterbury) won the girls’ under-17 singles title on Saturday, when she beat Miss A. Stevens (Auckland), 6-0, 6-2, in a match marked by powerful serves and excellent tennis from Miss Legge.

Miss Legge’s win was even more meritorous as she played throughout the championships with a steel pin in her hip after a motor-scooter accident. It was incorrectly reported on Saturday that Miss Legge was beaten by Miss C. O’Carrol (Northland) in the semifinal. In fact. Miss Legge beat Miss O’Carrol, 6-3, 6-1. It was also incorrectly reported that in the semi-final of the boys’ under-17 singles championship, R. Rae (Hutt Valley) was beaten by L Baudinet (Hawke’s Pay). Rae beat Baudinet 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. For the first time since officials .can remember the national under-15 and under-17 championships had to be completed under floodlights. The match involved was the under-17 mixed doubles between I. Baudinet (Hawke’s Bay) and S. Caldwell (Wairarapa) who were playing K. Barry (Auckland) and J. Dillon (Canterbury). It started at 9.15 and Baudinet and Miss Caldwell came off the court triumphant' at 11.05 p.m. after having won 2-6. 6-1, 10-8.

In the first set Barry and Miss Dillon capitalised on their opponents’ mistakes to take the set 6-2. But, in the second set, Baudinet and Miss Caldwell started to adjust to

playing under the floodlights to win 6-1. The third and deciding set was full of long, hard rallies and excellent net volleying. At one stage Barry and Miss Dillon were leading 8-7 and 30love, but did not have the finishing power and the other pair took the remaining two games to win 10-8. G. Snook (Auckland) and R. Rae (Hutt Valley) gave their best in the under-17 boys’ singles final and the match was a combination of hard hitting and good retrieving with Snook coming out the winner, 6-4, 3-6, 9Auckland scored the hat-trick when, for the third successive year it won the Slazenger Cup for gaining the greatest number of points in the championships. Women’s Match Drawn

The only match played on Saturday when the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior women’s competition resumed, resulted in a draw with Elmwood by the leading team, Edge ware. United could not muster a full team and had to default to Avonside. The top player in Saturday’s games, Jan Bishop (Elmwood) took some time to settle in her match against Judith Habgood but won, 7-5, 6-1. Results were: Elmwood v. Edgcwarc Singles.—Jan Bishop beat Judith Habgood, 7-5, 6-1: Gillian Palliser lost to Robin Walls, 1-6, 0-6; Hilary Page lost to Pauline Boatwood, 0-6, 1-6; Julie Rountree beat Lesley Davie, 6-0, 6-2.
