Inter-Island Match Won By South Boys

The South Island under-14 schoolboys beat North Island by 9 runs to 8 when the New Zealand junior schoolchildren's softball championships were concluded at English Park on Saturday.

The North Island evened the tournament with an 8-6 win over the South Island in the girls' section.

Both of the boys’ teams played excellent softball and showed experience far beyond their years and a knowledge of the fundamentals superior to that of many a senior player.

South failed to score in the first innings but a good hit by R. Strom enabled T. Paewai to score for North. South opened its account in the third when M. Stratford produced a three bagger. Stratford scored together with J. Joyce to make the score 5-1 to South. North retaliated twice in its third innings, making the score 5-3. North equalised in the fourth innings with runs to Paewai and B. Puke. S. Mallon scored on a sacrifice by B. Williams in the fifth for South, and South went further ahead when P. Keehan scored.

Brilliant work by Souths short stop, R. Keith, kept the North team scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings and Keith later scored in South Island's sixth. South now led 7-3. North scored three times in its last innings but Lt was insufficient to beat South. Scorers for South were: Mallon (2), Keith, Joyce, Stratford, Keehan (2), B. Keehan and D. Williams.

North’s scorers were: Paewai (3), T. Thorn, Strom, C. Murry and Puke.

In the girls’ match. North proved too consistent in the field and batted soundly. South began slowly but recovered well to be equal with the North team, 6-all by the end of the sixth innings. A final home run by C. Downs won the game for North.

Drugs Recovered. The drugs taken from a parked I car on Friday were found by | detectives in a private garage lin Cranmer square yesterday.
