Convicted Of Saigon Killing
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, January 11. A one-eyed Viet Cong agent was convicted yesterday of assassinating a South Vietnamese political leader. He was sentenced to death by firing squad. Vo Van En, aged 21, was found guilty in a one-day trial of assassinating Tran Van Van, one of the most vocal critics of Premier Nguyen Cao Ky’s military regime in the Constitutent Assembly. In spite of tearful pleas by his female defence lawyer, the special court took only one hour to find En guilty of shooting down Van as he
rode in his car toward the Assembly. En was given an opportunity to make a final statement but stood mute. About four or five minutes later he mumbled to reporters: “I’m innocent. I’m innocent.” En admitted he was part of the assassination team but said he was only the driver of the motor-cycle from which Van was shot. He said a man named Due fired the shots. Van’s driver and a police officer both testified they saw En do the shooting.
