Few Winners At Short Odds
The success of long-shots and all-the-way winners marked the racing in the minor events at Washdyke on Saturday. The only successful favourite was Don Carlos, which outclassed the maiden sprinters with front-running tactics in the Fairlie Handicap No. 2.
The best winning price was Battery Boy’s £32 4s in the Frist Levels Handicap, the opening race and the first leg of the on-course double. Battery Boy, the 14th favourite of 16, led for the last six furlongs of this 14-furlong event Double Step led from end to end to win the Second Levels Handicap. She paid £l5 2s for a win and £Bl3 16s 6d for £1 with Battery Boy in the oncourse double. This dividend was shared by the holders of 12 5s tickets.
Pacemaking tactics also proved successful for Grace Harwar, the 8/9 favourite of nine in the Waimate Handicap. the main race for trotters.
In the maiden trot, the Kingsdown Handicap, Markalan led from start to finish. Although not the outright favourite he was one of the popular fancies and the only minor
winner, besides Don Carlos, to pay less than double-fi-ure odds. The first race for maiden pacers, the Fairlip Handicap No. 1, was won in style by the fifth favourite Master Kent. He tracked the pacemaker, Boy Logan, to the straight then drew away to win by three lengths. Stepson, a 13 to one shot adopted similar tactics when he beat the 2:18 class sprinters hands down in the Taiko Handicap. After following Shy Bess to the straight he was left clear when the pacemaker tangled with about 100 yards to go. Stepson was one of two winners sired by the colonial stallion False Step. The other was Double Step. The imported stallion, Garrison Hanover, was represented by three winners, Richard Hanover, Royal Fame and 'Master Kent.
