Good Night For C. C. Devine
The Templeton trainer-driver, C. C. Devine, had a 100 per cent record at Hutt Park on Saturday night. His two runners, Bass Strait in the Johnny Globe Handicap and Demure in the Gold Bar Handicap, both led all the way.
But Devine nearly missed the trip. He drove at Timaru earlier in the day, where he won with Master Kent, and drove to Christchurch to catch a chartered flight for Wellington. He was late for the flight, which was held back for him. He arrived at the airport only a minute before the deadline. Bass Strait was hotly challenged half-way down the straight by the second favourite, Barbuda, which went into a break and galloped to the line in fourth place. This left second place to another South Island runner, Money Wise, which was second or third all the way. Unreal, which also received
I the run of the race, took i third ahead of Barbuda and , Bill Hanover. ' Demure won her second 1 race from her last three > starts when she outclassed r the field in the Gold Bar Handicap. She began best from the middle and immedi- ’ ately went to the front. Look • Ahead, after a slow start, ran r up to challenge her for the lead but was never able to get on equal terms, let alone head Demure off. 1 He was a spent force on I the turn and Demure came i away to win easily by five ■ lengths from Vicki Macree, i which had been about fourth until the turn. > Almost in line half a length , back were Rosedale Hanover > and Roydon Frost, followed , by the tiring Look Ahead 1 four lengths away.
