SUNNY WEST COAST
Temperatures In 80s Temperatures well into the eighties were experienced on the West Coast yesterday. The Press Association says that warm, humid weather over the last six weeks reached a peak when the temperature in the shade at Westport at 1.35 p.m. reached 87 degrees. Hundreds flocked to beaches, swimming pools, and picnic grounds. On Friday, says the Westport correspondent of “The Press,” it was necessary to throw sand on Palmerston street, Westport’s main shopping area, and its approaches, because of melted tar.
The Greymoutb correspondent of “The Press” says that after a hot humid day on Saturday, a light shower at night barely moistened the ground, and yesterday dawned cloudless and warm. Temperatures varied from place to place. The weather office at Hokitika reported that a maximum temperature of 77 degrees, in spite of strong sea breeze, was recorded shortly before noon. In Greymouth there was not a breath of wind, and a thermometer outside Broadcasting House soared to 87 degrees. Fox Glacier was reported to have registered 84 degrees, the highest for many years. From shortly before noon, cars with surfboards in their roof racks formed almost a procession at times heading for Rapahoe beach.
