Fast Mile Likely
A new provincial mile time may be set at the New Brighton Athletic Club's cinder track at the Rawhiti Domain on Wednesday evening, when the present record holder, B. Jones (University), will be given the chance to run against the best milers in the province. Those invited to run Include B. Dyer (Christchurch), who has recorded 4min 11.7 sec, and B. Welsh (Ashburton), 4min 14sec. R. Allen (Christchurch) has a best time of 4min 14sec, and S. McLean (Toe H) is also a strong runner. Jones’s present mile time Is 4min s.6sec. Mr H. D. Savage, president of the New Brighton Club, said that much work had been done on the track, and that it was very fast. Mr Savage said the club had decided to hold the mile because Jones was leaving the province soon and had expressed a wish to run on the track. Jones said that he could not say what time he would run. "That depends on the conditions at the time," he said. This will be his last track appearance before the Canterbury championships begin on February 25 as he is being married on Saturday. A women’s. 100 yards, a junior men’s 880 yards, and an under--17 boys’ 440 yards will also be run.
