Pope Wins Fourth Finn Title

The noted Nelson yachtsman, M. A Pope, a former Interdominion Finn class representative, yesterday won the fourth South Island Finn class championships at Kaikoura.

After dropping his worst race, a ninth placing, Pope finished with three wins. Second on the points table was last year's champion, J. G. Farmer (Rotorua) and the strong Christchurch club contender, J. S. Wearn, was third. The surprise performance of this series was by the relatively unknown B. Winters, who, sailing in his first major championship event, finished fifth. His worst placing was a seventh. There were moderate easterly breezes on Saturday for the first two races and good racing was the result. Yesterday the weather was fine, but the calmer conditions took away much of the interest. Results: First race (15 started).—Tlffinny (M. A. Pope, Aurora). 12:03:03, 1: Vanity Sue (.1. G Farmer. Rotorua), 12:03:40, 2Finnaddict (R. D. Eastmond', Charteris Bay), 12:03:52, 3Loafin Too (P. T. Victory For Pether By winning the final fifth race without a falter, and without giving the opposition a chance, the Wellington yachtsman, J. Pether (Muritai) sailing Captain Morgan, on Saturday, won the third New Zealand Restricted Moth class championships. There was a tie for second position but after a count-back. Niggle (A. M. Holland, Waimakariri), took this place from his club mate, T. Blanchard, who scored the same points. Fourth was the consistent Canterbury skipper, B. R. Marriott. The final race was sailed in a moderate easterly with a medium sea and showed Captain Morgan to advantage. From the start it was only a question of how much he would win by. There was a battle for second place with O. Brown taking it easily in the end, but the rest of the major placings close. Results:—
