SATELLITE SUCCESS
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) CAPE KENNEDY, Jan. 15. The communications satellite Intelsat II has been successfully stationed over the Pacific Ocean and is expected to be ready for commercial use in about two weeks’ time. Jubilant officials of the Communications Satellite Corporation announced late last night that the satellite had been placed in orbit near the international dateline and “all on-board communications systems appear to be functioning properly.” The spacecraft, launched last Wednesday, will act as a switchboard in space, providing commercial and military telephone, teletype and television services between the United States, Australia and the Far East.
Nuns* Names. Teaching nuns at Le Retraite Roman Catholic High School In Bristol have dropped their saint names and reverted to their baptismal names. The order of Le Retraite is believed to be the first in Britain to make the change.—London, January 15.
