SHOE SHINE GIRLS

Holidays can be a time for reflection, as well as for the frenzied pursuit of pleasure. This New Year message is addressed, particularly, to the wives of New Zealand men. It is time for them to reflect on what they have achieved, their small deficiencies, their shortcomings: and how, in 1967, they can prove themselves more worthy of the men who married them. The Germans are regarded as a highly efficient race, and it is of some interest that in Hamburg recently a survey showed

that two of every three of the housewives interviewed married for love, and, if they had their lives to live over again, would marry the same man. There was greater significance in the discovery that the same two, of the same three women, polish their husbands’ shoes every day. Now then, you, lolling on the beach, soaking in the sunshine and waiting for your husband to call you to the lunch he has prepared, what about it? Are you really doing your job? When did you last polish your husband’s shoes, and aren't you ashamed that it wasn’t today? After all.

look at it in its proper per spective. You have his car most of the time, and ar extensive wardrobe. Hi feeds you, he pays you> bills, whenever possible And all you have to do, ii return, are a few trivial tasks about the house—nothing to compare, in intensity of effort, with the cold world of commerce. And in addition, you have the privilege of sharing the children’s company during the holiday periods. So get your rag out—and polish. Otherwise, you may very well see the beginnings of a stream of emigrants to Hamburg, Germany.
