Gift For Zambia

Two weighing crates, as illustrated in the above photograph, were shipped to Zambia last week. They represented part of a consignment of agricultural equipment and machinery being gifted to Zambia by the New Zealand Government. The crates were designed by Mr J. D. Tait, of D. H. Brown and Company, and built for him by Cyclone Industries. Because of his practical knowledge of pig raising, - Mr Tait has incorporated some very useful features in this equipment. One of the most important is that the crate,

litself, is built within a ’stabilised framework, set on wheels. This means that the pig can be walked into the crate while it is resting on the base of the stabiliser. The raised arm, as shown, is pulled into position at the top of the frame, and without the problem of vibration the scales give both the liveweight and the dressed weight of porkers and baconers. Another important aspect is that the machine has been built for weighing pigs I quickly. A pen of pigs can be walked through, practically in succession. As each pig walks in, the bar at the top is pulled down, so making the scales take the weight, and a steady reading obtained at once. When the pig leaves the crate, it is lowered to the base for penning the next pig. The equipment has been designed for one-man operation, and with wheels at the base, can be moved about a piggery.
