NEW TURNIP SEED
Seed of a new turnip variety, Kapai 67, which is an improved version of Kapai 66, is to be made available to farmers through normal trade channels. Mr T. P. Palmer, a plant breeder at the Crop Research Division, said that about 20001 b of seed would be distributed, mainly in Canterbury and North Otago, and would be sufficient for growing about 4000 acres. Compared with Kapai 66, Mr Palmer said it had better bulb shape, better yield and a little quicker development. In general Its performance would not be much different to Green Globe, but it would of course also have the advantage of resistance to virus. It was not yet, however, up to York Globe in speed of development, but it was hoped to have something to replace York Globe in a year or two.
