Centennial Year

(New Zealand Press Association)

PAEROA, Dec. 30.

The re-enactment on Sunday of the landing of Captain Cook at Thames will mark the opening or the centennial celebrations of the founding of the Thames goldfields. The landing party comprising Captain Cook with his two lieutenants and an interpreter, will come ashore in a whale boat manned by a crew from H.M.N.Z.S. Invereil, which will be anchored off-shore.

A Maori challenge party from the Ngatimaru tribe, which inhabited the area

when the actual landing took place nearly 200 years ago, will meet the landing party. The customary exchange of gifts will take place. Messages from the mayors of Waihi and Paeroa will be read at the ceremony.

The re-enactment of the landing will open a full year of activity for Thames.

The official recognition of the Thames goldfields centenary will be marked by a week-long programme from August 1.
