Obituary
Mrs M. Davies Mrs Marjorie Davies, a well-known primary school teacher and representative tennis player, died in Christ church recently. As Marjorie Bain, she attended Rangi-ruru School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, and Canterbury University College. She represented the university at tennis and later, when living in England, competed at
Wimbledon. While in England she married the late Mr H. Tasman Davies. She returned to New Zealand with her two children in 1935. Mrs Davies was regarded as a brilliant teacher. She taught at Wharenui School for some years and at other primary schools in Christchurch. During one of her return visits to Britain, between 1954 and 1959, she went back to her profession to teach under-privileged children in London schools. In Christchurch Mrs Davies will be remembered also for her work for elderly persons, through her Red Cross activities and for residents of “Fernwood,” the South Island hostel of the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind. Mrs Davies is survived by a daughter, Mrs J. S. Pollard, of Christchurch, and a son, Professor J. T. Davies, the first Rutherford Scholar, now head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham University.
