Recognition Of Rescue

Mr A. J. McMurtrie, the taxi-driver who played a big part in rescuing four boys and two girls after a car plunged into the Avon river near the New Brighton bridge just after mid-night on December 4, has been given a watch by grateful parents. Mr McMurtrie, of 157 Locksley avenue, lost a brand new wrist watch, worth £25, while rescuing the teen-agers.

In a letter to the editor of “The PreSs,” a writer using the non-de-plume “Curious” asked if Mr McMurtrie had been thanked by all the parents and if his watch had been replaced “after his gallant effort.”

Mr McMurtrie is at present on a deer-stalking holiday in Southland, but his wife said last evening that all the parents concerned had expressed their thanks and appreciation. “The watch was delivered to our house when only the children were at home. It was the father of one of the teenagers in the car who delivered the watch, we think,” Mrs McMurtrie said. “We would like this opportunity of expressing our thanks, publicly, for the replacement of the watch.”
