ICE HOLED HULL
Alatna Docked For Repairs (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 29. Hull damage was suffered in Antarctic ice by the tanker Alatna which was diverted to Port Chalmers for emergency repairs. The tanker went into dry dock today for work to be done on a 26in crack in a ballast tank and a hole in a cargo tank. The 5720-ton tanker apparently suffered the damage after unloading its cargo of nearly 30,000 barrels of aviation gasoline and jet fuel, said First Officer R. W. Lucy. “We can only deduce that it happened after leaving the fuelling berth at Hut Point,” he said. “But we did not know about the damage until we were in the open sea out of the ice.”
There was no danger or hazard however. Water was pumped out of the ballast tanks until the damage was above the water line.
