Unsuccessful Day For Undefeated Bowlers
Not one of the four bowling teams that had qualified in the Christmas fours with )ut a loss remained in the field after the first two rounds of poit-section play yesterday.
Roberts (Cashmere) was in fine form to beat Wilkie (Linwood), 23-5, in the first round, but succumbed to 8001, the steady New Brighton player, in the afternoon.
Lulham (Christchurch) lost his first game to Dunn (Fendalton) and Deavoll (Sydenham) beat Barnes (Elmwood) in the first round. Conditions again were not pleasant for bowls. Play was postponed until 12.30 p.m. and although the greens did play quite well the biting south - easterly wind froze competitors and spectators.
Because of the delays the finals will not be held until Saturday and two rounds will be played on this afternoon. Played Superb Shot
There was some exciting matches at the Elmwood green, and D. Colville (St. Albans) figured in two of them.
Playing against the veteran C. Rowe (Opawa), Colville, after an extra end, was level at 14-14. His number three, W. Cole, played a superb shot to trail the kitty to go two up. Row e drove with his first shot and took out one bowl. Colville added another with a finely drawn shot and Rowe, trying hard to push the kitty on to his back bowls, just failed to squeeze through the narrowest of gaps. In the second round T. Smee (Fendalton) and Colville earned constant applause as the head score changed quickly and both teams pro-
duced some excellent drawing. Six shots on the eighth end, all drawn, after Cole had played a beautifully-judged running shot, put Colville into an 18-10 lead, which, at that stage seemed sufficient. But Smee is a doughty fighter. He returned the compliment on the fourteenth end by drawing six shots and from then on it was nip and tuck. On the twentieth end Smee was leading 21-20 but the St. Albans team let Smee in for four shots on the head and with his last bowl Colville was short and failed to salvage any points, and the four placed Smee in a virtually impregnable position. On the St Albans green, 800 l continued his steady progress with two good wins and with Greenwood (Dallington) and A. Smith (Sydenham) goes through to the final rounds.
At Opawa, Pankhurst’s team, which has as its lead the former New Zealand cricket captain, W. A. Hadlee, beat Vujcich (Sydenham) in the first round but lost a close game to Morrison (Linwood) in the second round. Coup (Kaiapoi) a neat
bowler had two good wins yesterday and he is one who could upset some of the prominent Christchurch fours today.
