MISHAP IN SHIP Rewiring Of Winch Gear Ordered

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, December 21. Marine Department surveyors at Bluff ordered the rewiring of the winching gear on four hatches on the phosphate ship Baron Wemyss after a five-ton derrick crashed into No. 3 hold on Monday afternoon.

Watersiders were working in and around the hold when the derrick fell. No-one was injured. The president of the Bluff Watersiders’ Union (Mr R. W. Powley) said the men were extremely fortunate they escaped injury. After the accident, the Marine Department officials were called in to inspect the

remaining four hatches, and only one of these was passed fit for use.

One derrick was brought into use yesterday, and another was working late today. The rest should be in use again tomorrow. All the derricks are being inspected again by the department before they are used.
