GUILTY OF ARSON

Youth For Sentence

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. Kelvin David Wright, aged 20, a farm labourer, was found guilty today of wilfully setting fire to the Papakura police station on June 18. Mr C. E. H. Pledger, S.M., remanded him to Auckland for sentence on Friday. “This case was not truly one of circumstantial evidence because Wright admitted igniting petrol on the porch of the station,” said the Magistrate.

The facts of breaking glass being heard when he was on the porch, and the tin being found inside the station, were consistent with wilful action. The evidence negated the defence claim of an accident.

The Court did not have to be satisfied beyond all possible doubt, but only beyond reasonable doubt.

Senior - Sergeant B. W. James asked for restitution of £1095 for damage done to the station.
