Needy Dunedin Family

Sir, —I just can’t understand how a mother and six children could starve on £l7 a week because that’s the amount the Social Se-

curity Department pays a widow (or deserted wife) with six dependent children! If the woman concerned had only £3 10s out of £l7 weekly left for food, what did she spend the balance on? Our hospital services are free—medical aid is at least subsidised. Did she have large hire purchase payments to meet? I, too, have known adversity. My husband became an invalid 10 years before he died. We had a house to pay off and children to educate. With the help of the Social Security Department, we managed. We grew our own vegetables, and fruit and eggs and honey. I baked, and preserved and sewed. Today the children are University graduates—the home nearly freehold. The Social Security Department staff are in my opinion, just wonderful. —Yours, etc., 2/10656. December 21, 1966.
