U.S. Appeal To Thant

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 19.

The United States yesterday asked United Nations Secretary-General, U Thant, to take whatever steps he thought necessary to bring about talks on a Vietnam cease-fire.

A spokesman for the Secre-tary-General said U Thant already had been seeking a cease-fire, but that he would study the United States request closely. Though North Vietnam is not a member of the United Nations, U Thant has in the past been able to make contact through diplomatic channels.

Some of his previous efforts to bring the parties together met with a cool response in Washington because of scepticism over Hanoi’s intentions. U Thant conferred with Mr Tewfik Bouattoura, of Algeria —the country which has served as his principal communications line to Hanoi.
