SMITH’S PLAN

Confusion In Party

WI Press Assn.—Copyright) SALISBURY, Dec. 19. The Rhodesian Premier, Mr lan Smith, is expected to face criticism from the Right wing of his Rhodesian Front Party over his plan to establish a commission to test Rhodesian public opinion on the “H.M.S. Tiger” constitutional proposals.

Salisbury’s “Rhodesian Herald” reported that news of Mr Smith's new move had caused consternation among some Parliamentary members of his party. The paper said a number of confused back-benchers were rushing about on Sunday trying to get more information on the plan. It is understood it was agreed at last week’s Parliamentary caucus that Mr Smith would in future advise the caucus before making new moves on the constitutional position. The agreement of the party is likely to hinge on what constitutional proposals any commission is given to put to the people.
