Western Christmas Ways In Japan

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) TOKYO. Thanks to the young postwar generation of Japanese, Western-style Christmas cards are replacing the traditional New Year greeting cards.

Christmas-card makers have hired hands to fill this year’s increased orders for cards conveying the western greet-' ing of “A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.” The makers have reported that the accent this year is on simple designs of drawings and pictures on a white background. But the wide variety available will range from reindeer and Santa Claus designs to artistic Jap-

anese brocade cards and cartoon sketches.

Christmas Eve parties in Japan have also taken on a western flavour. None nowadays is complete without western-style pastry, especially double and triple-tiered cakes. One cake-making firm alone has orders from pastry shops in Tokyo for 280,000 cakes before Christmas. Another indication of the Westernisation of Christmas in Japan is the switch from cabaret to home as the centre of festivities.
