Board Will Start Depot Soon

The Christchurch Transport Board will proceed with the construction of a new depot in Ferry road as soon as loan formalities have been completed.

The board was formally notified yesterday that its application to borrow £115,000 for the project had been approved.

The new depot is needed for efficient operation of vehicles and the proper housing of staff. The works and traffic committee chairman (Mr S. E. Boanas) said the present setup in Moorhouse avenue was poor and unsuited for servicing a modern bus fleet. “Furthermore, the staff quarters are very much out

of date and do not comply with modern standards customary in a bus undertaking such as ours,” he said.

The present buildings, which housed the old tram fleet, were erected in 1905. Today their design would not be permitted because they do not comply with the earthquake code. Mr Boanas said it would be in the best interests of everyone to proceed with the building programme.
