N.Z. Selling Small Packs Of Butter

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, December 19. The idea that New Zealand should market its butter in packs smaller than 11b was a sound one, the director of the Dairy Board’s Marketing Division, Mr S. T. Murphy, said today.

New Zealand was already selling butter in lib, jib and 11b packs in Asian countries and a lib butter-packing machine had recently been installed at Auckland.

He was commenting on the suggestion of Mr R. J. Stewart, of Christchurch, that New Zealand should look closely at the possibility of marketing its butter in small onehelping sachets as well as larger packs.

Mr Murphy said the board had investigated the “minipacks” and was at present negotiating with airways in the Asian region for terms of sale.

However, it was cautious about offering the sachets to the general commercial market as they could not be adequately protected at retail points.

“They tend to get handled too many times and this damages the image of the brand employed,” he said. The board had not had any popular demand for small packs in New Zealand. Butter at 2s a pound was inexpensive while the cost of half-pound packs would have to be more than Is.
