An Earlier Holiday

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 9. The Qantas pilots’ strike has meant an early start to the Christmas holidays for some of the hundreds of youngsters at

boarding schools and colleges all over the country who have their parents overseas. The youngsters who have escaped from school early are those who have their homes in the Pacific and even the Far East. Growing demand for airline seats has sent housemasters and housemistresses scurrying to ensure that their charges get away on time. The luckiest pupils have had up to a week added to their vacations. A spokeswoman for St. Anne’s School, Takapuna, said that one of her pupils left for North Borneo last Saturday. Others had left for Gilbert and Ellice Islands and Fiji a few days later. A master at St. Kent!gern College, Pakuranga, which broke up today, said: “Some of our pupils had to go early because of the strike.” One had to travel to Hong Kong.
