Long Voyage South
(New Zealand Press Association)
NAPIER, Dec. 9. A 63-year-old adventurer and former Governor of Gambia, Sir Percy Wyn-Harris, arrived at Napier today aboard his 35ft flat-bottomed yacht after a long trip from the West Indies. Sir Percy Wyn-Harris and a sole crew member, Mr M. White, formerly of Feilding, began their trip nine months ago. Their voyage in the Dutch-designed and built craft took them through the Windward Islands along the Venezuelan coast to Panama. From there they sailed south through the Pacific to the Galapagos Islands before
sailing 3000 miles to the Marquesas. From the Rarotongan and Tahitian Islands the pair continued south until they sighted Portland Island, off the coast of New Zealand. Napier is their first New Zealand landfall. The yacht will be based at the port for about five months. Sir Percy Wyn-Harrls's main reason for calling at the port, is to visit his son, Mr T. Wyn-Harris. a farmer at Hatuma, near Waipawa. Although this is the first trip he has made to New Zealand in his yacht. Sir Percy Wyn-Harris flew from Athens to visit his son last year.
