ATHLETICS MEETING
Starting Time Put Back A special athletics meeting, to replace the normal inter-club events, will be held on January 21, the Canterbury Athletic Centre decided last evening. The meeting would begin at 6 p.m. although a six-mile race would start 30 minutes earlier. It will take the form of the usual Saturday afternoon meeting with no entry fees and no trophies, said Mr D. W. McKenzie. The centre plans to invite the Greymouth athletes, D. C. McKenzie and E. M. Gray, to race in the six miles. However, Mr W. A. Kennedy said that it was unlikely that the date would suit McKenzie because the Canterbury marathon championship would be held on January 28. All-weather Track Mr Kennedy reported that he and Mr J. Miller had met the chairman of the City Council’s finance committee (Cr. H. P. Smith) suggesting “that the council take a more generous approach” to the construction of the allweather track. Cr. Smith had promised to look into the matter, Mr Kennedy said. The Wellington centre agreed to Canterbury's requests for the addition of javelin events for all grades, a junior hammer throw and a women’s 880 yards event in the Dorrie Leslie meeting in Wellington on January 28. However, because it could not provide suitable competition and the fact that the programme was already a heavy one, Wellington advised that it would not be able to hold 440 yards hurdles or pole vault events.
