Traffic Department

Sir, —My faith in the good service usually rendered by the staff of the city traffic department is fast waning. For the third time on Wednesday I was subjected to impoliteness and inefficiency at the hands of its junior officers. There were two queues at the couLter and as no notice concerning heavy traffic was in view and as no-one could inform me differently, I joined one of the lines. Having eventually arrived at the counter I was coldly informed that I had joined the wrong queue. This was followed up by a cutting remark in a loud voice to stop arguing and join the other line. Since the department advocates courtesy on the roads it seems consistent that it should practise it in its office.—Yours, etc., FED-UP FRED. December 2, 1966. [Mr J. F. Thomas, traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council, replies:—"To assist persons wishing to pay heavy traffic fees, a notice is displayed at the end of the public counter with an arrow indicating the appropriate queue. The allegation of discourtesy I will be pleased to investigate if your correspondent is prepared to call personally and acquaint me with the full details of the complaint.”]
