Official Report And Prices

The official report on yesterday’s wool sale issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers' Association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, states: — "The fourth Christchurch wool sale of the 1966/67 season was held at the Wool Exchange, when four catalogues totalling 29,459 bales were submitted. The offering was again drawn mainly from Canterbury and Marlborough with a small quantity from Nelson and the West Coast. Although not quite up to the standard of the earlier sales, the wools on the whole opened up weH, being mainly sound and weM grown. The colour, generally, was also quite good, though a certain number of clips were showing light dust and a small amount of yolk stain. The condition, however, was unusually heavy for this sale and the bulk of the halfbred wools were a stronger quality than usual due mainly to the abundance ot feed.

“There was a large percentage of halfbred and Corriedale dips, the balance being Romney wool, with a small offering of Mertno. Piece wools were mostly rather heavy in condition. Ewe wools predominated, but there were sUil a fair number of both woolly and shorn hogget lines. Practically no second shear was on offer.

"The tale opened before a full attendance of buyera and competition was keen from the outset, especially for the finer qualities. The main bidding came from the Continental buyers and Japan, with some support from Bradford on the coarser grades. "As compared with the recent Dunedin sale, halfbred prices were irregular and over-all slightly easier, with haifbred skirtings fully 2i per cent cheaper. Fine to extra fine cross, breds were in buyers’ favour, whilst medium to strong descriptions were on a par. A number of the coarser sorts and also clothing oddments were passed to the Wool Commission.”
