N.Z. Scientist To Be Director

SYDNEY, December 6.
One of Australia’s top defence scientists, Dr. William A. S. Butement, will leave Government service on January 1, to join private industry. Since 1949, Dr. Butement, who was born in Masterton of an Otago family, has been in executive charge of Australian defence scientific research and devolpment, which includes the activities of the Woomera rocket range. In his post as chief scientist with the department of supply, he has guided the development of the world-renowned Ikara anti-submarine guided weapon and the Malkara antitank missile.
Dr. Butement, who was educated in Sydney and London, is to become director of research with the giant British Plessey Group of companies. He has made no comment on his new position except to say that he was retiring from Government service, because, at 62, he was past the normal retirement age.
