Govt. Action Sought On Transport To Chathams
The problem of transport to the Chatham Islandslwould get worse before it got better, Mr S. J. S. Barker told, the provincial executive of Nhfth Canterbury Federated Farmers in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Barker, who represents the islands on the executive, said the position had worsened because the Holmburn would not sail to the Chathams in January. Efforts were still being made to get an extra service in February. Mr Barker also referred to the last flying boat service scheduled for the end of March. There would be more intending travellers than were
on waiting lists, he said. The meeting decided to send a telegram to the Minister of Aviation, seeking action on air services to the islands.
Later in the meeting, a letter was read from Airwork, Ltd., saying it was making inquiries from the Internal Affairs Department about the use of a light aircraft, capable of seating eight The company thought it would be “eminently suitable" for flights between Wellington and Christchurch and the Chathams.
“This definitely offers a possibility," said Mr Barker.
