Title Deeds of Goatskin
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, Dec. 6.
A man who bought the most northern plot of land in Australia—4B perches on the tip of Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula—this week received the deeds, written on goatskin. Senior Constable N. Hughes, of the Cairns Police, paid 20 Australian dollars (£N.Z.S) for the section. He is the third owner. The first paid £N.Z.4 18s for it 100 years ago. Constable Hughes bought it from the Government’s Repatriation Commission, which acquired it in 1922. The land is at Somerset —a town that exists in name only. The nearest inhabitants are a group of aboriginals living 300 yards away. Constable Hughes plans to retire to Somerset
